(1908-2000) Born in Tokyo, Shigeru Sugiura is one of the more influential comic artists in Japanese history. Even though his oil paintings were included in the Emperor Exhibition in 1930 but he chose to became a comic artist instead of a painter. In the 1950s he won mainstream fame for his comedic cartoons, characterized by a high level of surreal comedy and a host of peculiar characters such as Sarutobi Sasuke and Doron Chibimaru. In the 1970s his work experienced a second boom and his work turned even more surreal and avant-garde.
